Play-based Inclusion era
In the Play-based Inclusion era (1971–1997), preschool education was shaped by representative voices advocating child-centered, play-based learning and inclusive practices, including Loris Malaguzzi of Reggio Emilia, Carol Copple and Sue Bredekamp of the Developmentally Appropriate Practice framework, and Stanley Greenspan with his DIR/Floortime approach. Loris Malaguzzi's approach foregrounded inquiry-driven projects, the classroom as a collaborative studio, and families as partners, with the environment acting as the 'third teacher'. Carol Copple and Sue Bredekamp articulated Developmentally Appropriate Practice, emphasizing developmentally suitable curricula, ongoing teacher observation, and inclusive programming. Stanley Greenspan's DIR/Floortime emphasized relational, play-based engagement to support diverse learners, including children with developmental differences, within home and school contexts.
